Rehabilitation

Loss of function and independence is commonly observed among patients with life-limiting illnesses. Without the proper care, it can lead to a diminished quality of life. Rehabilitation can help increase mobility, restore physical function and improve symptoms, eventually allowing patients to regain some of their independence. This will reduce the patients’ sense of burden on their caregivers and enhance their quality of life.

At the Jockey Club Home for Hospice (JCHH), we offer a broad range of rehabilitation modalities, the most common being physical therapy and occupational therapy, to meet your care goals and needs.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy, concerns the identification and maximization of movement potential within the contexts of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Physical therapy can be provided in in-patient, clinic, out-patient and home settings in the form of exercise programs led by a physiotherapist.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy uses functional exercises to help patients overcome life-limiting symptoms and accomplish meaningful daily activities. It is effective at fostering a sense of independence and self-efficacy, making it a highly complementary component of palliative care.

In the palliative care setting, occupational therapists would typically help their patients improve activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, showering, functional mobility etc.) through various upper and lower body movements. Occupational therapy interventions may be carried out in in-patient, clinic, out-patient and home settings.
