  • Fur Indulgence in the Decadence of Baroque

    While fur keeps intensifying its influence on the world's fashion stage, local budding design talents joined the rave by pushing the envelope of furry ideas at the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition. Organized by the Young Executive Committee (YEC) of the Hong Kong Fur Federation, the Competition was held on 5 January 2012 at the InterContinental Hong Kong.

    The annual Hong Kong Fur Design Competition has always been a platform which local creative force looks up to experiment their original concepts. Notably, the Full Fur Category winner Sarah Lam Woon Hei of the 2011 event was awarded the Gold prize at the International Fur Design Competition REMIX in Milan and beat 38 contestants from around the world. In fact, Sarah is the second Hong Kong designer after Chiu Yu Hang who scored the same prize in 2009.

    "We have introduced this Competition since 1987 with an aim to kindle the interest of local design students in fur and nurture these budding talents for the fur trade. We are really thrilled and proud to see our young designers gaining international recognition, and with their passion and ingenuity empowering the growth of our industry," said Mr. Andy Wong, the Chairman of YEC.

    With increasing popularity, the Fur Design Competition had attracted a rising number of participants this year with a total of 290 sketches submitted. After screening, 20 from the Full Fur Category and 11 from the Fur Combination Category were conjured into apparel and presented to a judging panel comprising of representatives from sponsoring organizations and the fur industry, as well as renowned fashion designers and celebrities. There were seven prizes in total, including awards for the Full Fur Category and Fur Combination Category, the Commercial Award and the "My Favorite Fur Sketch" voted by netizens on the Hong Kong Fur Federation's Facebook fan page.

    Under the presentation theme "Enchanted Decadence", competing designs were strutted in three scenes which evolved around the dramatic Baroque era. 'Baroque Immaculate' led the parade with inspirational fur designs jazzed up by linear shapes and eloquent silhouettes to epitomize the serenity of the Baroque era. Meanwhile, the flirtatious yet refined look of the Baroque style was celebrated in the 'Baroque Dainty' scene, with ultra feminine and sweet designs in ample silhouettes to take centre stage. The extravagance of the era reached its climax in the final scene 'Baroque Exquisite', to feature flamboyant evening fur selections in rich contrasting tones which reminded one of the exaggerated grandeur of Queen Marie Antoinette.

    This year, the judging panel was comprised of the Consul of the Consulate General of Finland in the HKSAR, Ms. Marja Korhonen; Trade Commissioner of Italian Trade Commission in the HKSAR, Mrs. Paola Guida; Design Manager of Kopenhagen Fur, Mr. Michael Holm, Area Manager, China & Hong Kong of Saga Furs, Mr. Glenn Lam, socialites Ms. Fanny Sieh, Mrs. Reina Chau, Ms. Candy Law and fashion icon Mr. Wyman Wong and fashion designer Mr. Joseph Li.

    Fashion lovers including Mrs. Olivia Davies, Mrs. Patti Ho, Mr. & Mrs. CC & Harriet Tung, Mr. & Mrs. Brandon & Jenny Chau etc. attended the event. 
    On top of the exciting presentation from these competing fur entries, the "Designers Love Fur" epilogue again brought exhilaration to this annual extravaganza. Joining force with members of the Hong Kong Fur Federation to present their distinctive collections this year were eight designers, namely: Mr. Koyo William Cheung, Ms. Lu Lu Cheung, Mr. Arthur Lam, Mr. Henry Lau, Mr. Lo Sing Chin, Mr. Walter Ma, Mr. William Tang and Mr. Kevin Yeung.

    Over the years, the Hong Kong Fur Design Competition has received enthusiastic support from the local universities and institutes. This year, the Chinese University of Hong Kong's School of Continuing and Professional Studies was joining the event for the first time, adding to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Institute of Textiles and Clothing, the Hong Kong Design Institute's Department of Fashion and Image Design, the Clothing Industry Training Authority's Department of Design and Manufacture, the Caritas Bianchi College of Careers' Department of Fashion and Textiles, as well as members of the Hong Kong Fur Federation.
